Bugzilla – Bug 1187723
VUL-1: CVE-2020-28097: kernel-source,kernel-source-azure,kernel-source-rt: The vgacon subsystem contains an out-of-bounds read in vgacon_scrolldelta
Last modified: 2025-11-07 10:14:13 UTC
The vgacon subsystem in the Linux kernel before 5.8.10 mishandles software scrollback. There is a vgacon_scrolldelta out-of-bounds read, aka CID-973c096f6a85. Affected base branches: - SLE15-SP2 - linux-2.6.32 - linux-3.0 - linux-4.12 - linux-4.4 stable and master base branches already has this patch. Upstream patch [0]. [0] https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/973c096f6a85e5b5f2a295126ba6928d9a6afd45.patch
The same issue was reported already in the past in bug 1176278.
ECO was approved, so we can disable this feature now. Please reference jsc#SLE-23486 for 12-sp5 and jsc#SLE-23485 for 15-sp3 and newer.
Actually I found that it's been already disabled on SLE15-SP3, the upstream fix to remove the option was a part of big update of DRM stack. So it's only about SLE12-SP5. I'll update the patch reference for SLE15-SP3, though.
... and it turned out that SLE12-SP5 also already had the change, via bsc#1176278. I updated the patch reference accordingly. I guess we don't want to change other LTSS branches?

I currently would not require this for LTSS branches. The ECO covered only active products (12-sp5 , 15-sp3 and 15-sp4)
Then all done, reassigned back to security team.
