Description Christian Boltz 2005-08-14 13:56:34 UTC
I noticed that the progress bar (of package installation) and the guessed
remaining time are totally wrong when installing large packages like
kernel-source.

kernel-source was installed within 2 or 3 minutes, but the remaining time
decreased by about 30 minutes.

I know that guessing the remaining time will never be perfect, but you should
consider to include the package count and not only the number of bytes into
your calculation ;-)

The time estimate is completely bogus anyway, but yet people seem to want it.
Amazingly enough, it seems to be far less off than anybody who knows how this
acutally is calculated could think.

You might have encountered a time-recalc at a strange moment: Every 30 seconds
the projected time is recalculated based on the previous transfer rate.

And no, we will certainly not invest any more time to make bogus time
projections 5% less bogus...
