Description Fabrizio Magni 2005-08-19 09:57:21 UTC
The black screen issued by gnome after a user idle period doesn't revert to
normal desktop usage.

Only the mouse arrow is showed.

I had to kill X using ctrl-alt-backspace.

Bug-buddy is installed on the system.
Not sure about the -debuginfo packages.

i'm even not sure what log file you may need (I'm new to linux bug reports).

May me know what you need and I'm going to provide them as soon as possible.

Regards
Fabrizio

What version of gnome-screensaver do you have installed? Also, check, when the
screen goes blank, whether gnome-screensaver or xscreensaver is running.
Comment 2 Fabrizio Magni 2005-08-19 10:14:38 UTC
gnome-screensaver-0.0.9-2

# ps -fe|grep screen
oracle 27091 1 0 11:45 ? 00:00:00 gnome-screensaver

Something more required from my side?

Thank you.

Stanislav: Generally for duplicate bugs, newly filed bugs will be considered as
duplicate of old bugs. I'm wrong ?
Comment 6 JP Rosevear 2005-08-19 13:38:06 UTC
It doesn't really matter nags, usually the main bug is where ever you have to
most information and best response from the reporter.
Comment 7 Forgotten User NCG4lRmxtN 2005-08-20 18:24:44 UTC
The default screensaver settings are conflicted:

Desktop -> Gnome Control Panel
 -> opens "Desktop Preferences" window
-> 4th row of icons labeled "System":

    Network Proxies | Screensaver ("A") | Screensaver ("B") ...

Screensaver control "B" was set to blank the screen after 10 mins.
Screensaver control "A" was set to random screensavers after 10 mins.

I returned to an empty dark screen.
Moved my mouse but only a flickering pointer appeared.
The pointer disappeared when I stopped moving the mouse.
Tapping the "Alt" key did nothing.
Switched to a console, did a "ps ax | less" then closed my apps nicely,
Then killed gnome-screensaver and the desktop returned to normal.

I opened Screensaver control "B" and switched it from "Blank Screen" to "disabled".
Opened Screensaver control "A" and set my preference to random after 8 minutes.

No more blank screen with flickering mouse, just the desired random screensavers.

I'd recommend changing the installation defaults as an interim solution, but
maybe in the future these two controls can be made aware of each other so they
will cooperate?

My apologies for previously selecting "worksforme". My workaround does, in fact,
work but the underlying problem still needs to be fixed.

Again, sorry for the extra e-mails!

OK, this *should* be my last attempt at restoring this bug's status.
Comment 10 Marcel Hilzinger 2005-09-02 17:02:36 UTC
As this bug is still in Beta4, and actually nothing seems to have been done, I
switched priority to Major. This is definitely a bug.
Comment 11 A Nagappan 2005-09-02 18:25:47 UTC
Marcel: I verified with Beta 4 and it works fine for me.
Comment 12 Marcel Hilzinger 2005-09-03 19:39:57 UTC
I made a fresh install (KDE-System), then installed Gnome. If I leave the
workstation for approx 15 minutes, then the screensaver blocks the
workstation. I can only see a flickering mouse cursor. Switching to console
and kill the gnome-screensaver gives me X back. But this bug is still there.

Maybe it's related to the screensaver(-module) started? Nevertheless I can
reproduce this bug in beta4.
Comment 13 A Nagappan 2005-09-03 21:09:21 UTC
Marcel: I just tried installing only GNOME. Maybe with the scenario, you have
tried it could be reproducable.

Rodrigo: ?
Comment 14 Fabrizio Magni 2005-09-05 08:30:29 UTC
Ican reproduce the bug too on beta4.

Both GNOME and KDE are installed.

gnome-screensaver is being used .
Comment 15 Rodrigo Moya 2005-09-08 06:55:09 UTC
This is fixed in gnome-screensaver 0.0.12, which has been submitted to
autobuild. Please reopen if it still happens with that version
Comment 16 Sonja Krause-Harder 2005-09-13 11:51:34 UTC
Still happens with version 0.0.12, at least on the machines we have in the
Solutions Lab at BrainShare.
Comment 17 Marcel Hilzinger 2005-09-13 13:51:49 UTC
I can confirm this for RC1. Bug still resists.
Comment 18 JP Rosevear 2005-09-13 14:51:55 UTC
It was fixed in a rev to 0.0.12, we are retesting everything to make sure and
will add test packages here shortly.

If you want to work around you can switch to gdm as the login manager.

> It was fixed in a rev to 0.0.12,

I have tested with 0.0.12 (installed the RC2 package on RC1). I did not do a
full RC2 install, so if I need to update something else, please say so.

(I don't need a workaround for the BrainShare machines, we just disabled the
screensaver.)

Comment 20 JP Rosevear 2005-09-14 00:42:52 UTC
Completely resolved now, see bug 105780 which also has the latest package.
