Description Marcel Hilzinger 2005-08-19 11:29:10 UTC
Set up a printer through YaST has become a task for "IT-academics". In the new
dialog, its not possible to understand, wheter a found printer is configured
or not.

1. If you compare the first dialog with YaST in 9.3, you can see, that in 10.0
there are no informations

- what has to be configured?
- which printer is configured?
- how to configure

The online help is wrong, too.
If you just click on Next (stupid users will do this), YaST writes some
settings, but of course does not set up the printer.

2. Setting up a printer through the CUPS webinterface or the KDE printer
settings dialog is much easier. But for this you have to set a password for
the printer admin. Who of the users remember this change in 9.0?

Nobody. So the possibility to set up this password should also be integrated
in YaST (best already make a checkbox during install).

3. The checkbox for adjusting the Firewall is hard to find. "Change IPP
Listen" has no meaning for users

with button edit you can edit existing printer (with non-configured printer add
a new spool)
with add button you can in message box choose whether configure a new spool or
add a new printer

Good joke :-) I know, how to setup a printer.

The story is about usability of the YaST module. Usability should be improved
from version to version, if possible. The YaST Printig module is getting worse
and worse with each version of SL. Sorry, but thats my opinion.

I just installed Beta3 and had the same problem - I was not able to find the
place in the YaST-printer-configuration dialogue to change or view the setting
for CUPS for the "Listen to remote CUPS server" that was listed in the install
dialogue.

And I agree with Marcel that no "normal user" will know what is meant by "Change
IPP listen".

I think that the YaST interface lost a lot of usability in comparison to former
SUSE versions:
- the entry that CUPS is listening to remote CUPS servers is not listed with the
other "configured printer" entries
- I remember a warning that you have to change the firewall settings to make
this work already in the installation-dialogue, or it should at least be in the
help text in yast

Reopened the bug and added CC for usability group, as others seem to have the
same oppinon. Btw. the german online help is still not correct.

Yes, that's one of the points I wanted to report, too (see the screenshot
(attachment id=46682):

In the online help you are told to use the button "Konfigurieren" - but there
are only the buttons "Hinzufügen" and "Bearbeiten".

Or you should click on "Andere" and then on "konfigurieren" - but there is no
entry of that name in the menu you get when clicking on "andere".

fixed in beta4
there are already a lot suggestions, if you can, split them to more bugreports
please, attache english screenshots and comments

You mean beta5/RC1? Because in beta4 I can't see any changes...
Comment 9 Michal Zugec 2005-09-02 09:14:16 UTC
yes in RC1, sorry
