Description Alexey Eremenko 2005-08-19 21:51:40 UTC
After I insert a new CD/DVD, I try to use KDE Konqueror, and see the media.
(like I used "My Computer" in Windows)

Unfortunately for me, only the volume label can be seen by this kind of
so-called"mount". No files nor directories are shown.

Automated mount doesn't works in Konqueror as expected !
The bug is reproduceable 100% of the time on my PC.

Manual mount (and umount) works normally.

OS: SuSE Linux 10.1 BETA1
Drive: DVD+-RW (LG)

Possible problem is inside: Yast2 / KDE Konqueror / Kernel/...

Please try to reproduce with Beta2.

I think this is maybe a problem of KDE. Can you see and access the DVD/CD in /
media/ ? Is this a problem with only a special DVD or generally?

did you do a fresh installation or an update?

which url is shown in the konqueror location bar?

Maybe I can clear up this problem a bit. I have the same DVD RW drive (LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4040B) and I have a similar problem.

I have three machines - one with an old Pioneer DVD-RW, one notebook with a new Samsung DVD+/-RW, and my work machine which has the above LG DVD-ROM and a CDROM called "HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8520B".

On all of these machines, SuSE 10.0 OSS edition is installed. On all machines, automounting CD-ROMs works fine, in all drives. However, when I insert a DVD-ROM, R or RW into the above mentioned LG drive, the drive LED flashes for a couple seconds, then goes out and nothing happens.

Nothing in dmesg, nothing in syslog, no icon appears on the konsole, etc.

Manually mounting /media/dvdram and accessing the drive works fine, however it takes a couple seconds. Booting CDs and DVDs from the drive also works fine. Burning CDs and DVDs on this drive also works fine (using k3b).

My suspicion is that the kernel, or the mount command, or whatever detects the media change, just doesn't wait long enough for the drive to actually read from the DVD. Or, the LG DVD-drive does not properly detect inserted DVD media.

lshal + hwinfo output with different CDs/DVDs

Here is a demonstration of what happens when I insert a Knoppix 4.0 DVD and a SuSE 10.0rc1 CD1. I noticed two strange things:

a) in YaST/Hardware/CD-ROM, both my CD and DVD drive appear twice. I cannot remove them. If I add mountpoints via the "Add" button, they disappear after closing and restarting the CD-ROM YaST module.

b) "hwinfo --cd" outputs /dev/cdrom as a symlink for my CDROM, *and* my DVD drive.

c) Also, DVD-RAM media (which my DVD drive should be able to use) are not mounted when inserting them.

I don't know how to fix this. Please advise.

Thanks! ;)

Jens

That's extreme.
I also have a LG DVDRW drive model: HL-DT-STDVDRRW GWA-4161B

and I also experience the automount error. from time to time.

Sometimes all is OK, sometimes automount fails, but manual mount still
works.
