the integration of opensound is somewhat clumsy and difficult.

If you deselect the builtin sound of the kernel (alsa) you will have some
warnings  when you build/installthe kernel modules.

Also, if ALSA is not taken out of the kernel and you deselect ALSA, it still
will kick in everytime, even if opensound is being used.

This is a problem that's bein avaiable since the inclusion of ALSA.

The major reason to use Opensound over ALSA is that it performs bettrer, has a
wider support for hardware and does things you cannot do with ALSA.

Each new kernel installation now, needs a rebuild of the kernel which takes
quite some time.

You don't have to rebuild kernel at all.
If you don't need ALSA, simply tune modprobe.conf & co.
As the last resort, you can remove module files, too.

Based on Takashi's feedback in comment #1, integrating alternative sound 
drivers should be feasible. I don't think we are going to expend more 
effort on this.
