Description Andreas Seemann 2005-08-23 14:51:08 UTC
Booting from Installation Disk hangs after unsuccessful detection of PCMCIA-Devices.
This happens on a Dell Ispiron 9300 Deluxe Laptop
Comment 1 Olaf Kirch 2005-08-24 12:05:51 UTC
Stefan, this may be something for your team.
Comment 2 Stefan Behlert 2005-08-25 11:27:15 UTC
I think this is not a bug with PCMCIA but SATA.
Do you have a SATA CDrom e.g.?
Please look at console 4 (while installation is still active) and look what
the last insmod-line is. I think it will be something like ata_xii
Comment 3 Andreas Seemann 2005-08-25 12:15:35 UTC
The Laptop has no SATA-Device.
The problem happens while booting the System from the Installation-CD
Comment 4 Christian Zoz 2005-08-25 13:07:54 UTC
Please add 'NOPCMCIA=1' to the boot prompt and try again.
Comment 5 Andreas Seemann 2005-08-25 13:24:06 UTC
.. now it hangs after ...

searching for info file...
Comment 6 Christian Zoz 2005-08-25 13:42:06 UTC
That is not a pcmcia problem. Steffen, i don't know how to proceed. Would you
please take this?
Comment 7 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-08-25 14:04:28 UTC
Andreas, please look at console 3 and 4 for what it is doing last.
Comment 8 Andreas Seemann 2005-08-25 14:15:34 UTC
console 3:

insmod /modules/ata_piix.ko

console 4:

uniform CD_ROM driver rev 2.30
attached scsi generic sg1 at scsi1, channel 0, id0, lun0, type 5

... but the Laptop has no SCSI ..
Comment 9 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-08-25 14:28:48 UTC
Ok, some wild guess:

a) try (at boot prompt) 'brokenmodules=ata_piix'
b) try acpi=off

Does a) get you any further?
Comment 10 Andreas Seemann 2005-08-25 14:47:54 UTC
in case of a)

no installation Drive is found

in case of b)

console 3:

insmod /modules/ata_piix.ko

console 4:

uniform CD_ROM driver rev 2.30
attached scsi generic sg1 at scsi1, channel 0, id0, lun0, type 5
Comment 11 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-08-25 14:53:50 UTC
To make sure, please start with 'manual=2'. When linuxrc
shows the first dialog, switch to console 9. On the shell
there run 'modprobe ata_piix'. Does it hang?

If not, can you continue the installation?
Comment 12 Andreas Seemann 2005-08-25 15:03:14 UTC
the modprobe command hangs.

the installation continues but wasn't able to mount the CD-ROM
Comment 13 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-08-25 15:38:32 UTC
Thanks.
This points to a kernel problem. insmod ata_piix must not hang.
Comment 14 Andreas Gruenbacher 2005-08-26 10:17:44 UTC
Could I please get a sysrq+t and sysrq+p from the hang? (See Using sysrq on
http://opensuse.org/index.php/Bug_Reporting_FAQ#Kernel_Bugs; you may need a
serial console in case dmesg doesn't show the whole output.)

Does this bug still occur?

I assume that this has been fixed already; we didn't get any more reports of this kind of problem.
