AFAIK barrier=off only works as a mount parameter and has no effect on the
kernel cmdline anymore.

Jens, is this correct?

In that case the parameter can be removed from grub/lilo failsafe config.

That is correct, it can be removed.

Removed (for all archs where it was set). 
 
Done in SVN, will go to STABLE today.
