i installed smartpm with YOU, and when i try to open it with smart --gui, it 
looks like this:

Where did you get smartpm from? Actually we don't offer smartpm with SUSE Linux!

oops, i thought i had gotten it from the cd. it is actually from the guru i686   
repository.  sorry about that. im still new to yast.  is this problem 
something to do with suse though or is it just a result of a bad package?

As this package isn't in SUSE Linux, we can't do anything for you in this case.
Maybe Pascal has a clue? ;)
