Description Daniel Secareanu 2005-08-30 22:01:18 UTC
When I first installed beta3 and I logged on for the first time, I though I
didn't see correctly... the home directory icon was not aligned with the trash
and the computer icon on the desktop (was a bit to the right)... I didn't pay
too much attention and went forward. Now saving various files on the desktop I
noticed it more often. Whenever I save files, although the keep aligned option
is selected, the icons/files on the desktop are not really aligned (align to
grid is also selected somehere... don't remember where :)).

If I save around 10 files on the desktop, they're kept aligned. Starting from
around the second row from the left edge, around middle of it, they start being
placed sideways from the normal icon row... (see screenshot).

Icons on desktop not aligned despite keep aligned option selected
Comment 2 Daniel Secareanu 2005-08-30 22:17:35 UTC
This doesn't happen only with images, but with any other file that is saved as
(firefox, thunderbird, gimp) and it only happens with one random file (sometimes
it happened in lower left corner, sometimes middle of the second row).

Odd. I'm not seeing this.

The one odd thing everyone sees (distinct from what you're seeing, AFAIK) is the
gap above the Trash icon, which has to do with the Trash icon having several
states (full, empty, lid up) and the need to leave space for the "lid up" state.
I'm pretty sure this is different, though.

I've saved more files on the desktop, from firefox, thunderbird, and they were
kept aligned (I only saves a few of them anyways). Then I started saving the
same image from gimp 12 times one after the other without doing anything else,
just save as. As you will see in the attached screenshot, the images are not
aligned on the desktop, but some of them moved sideways, for more or less
obscure reasons.

The keep aligned option in desktop properties is still there... and the
files/icons and their names are not that big to actually push the icon on the
same line with them further away... I think...

desktop icon un-alignment, take 2
Comment 6 Daniel Secareanu 2005-08-31 10:56:53 UTC
Also notice the strange arrangement of picture names... I saved them in their
named order, but after 8, pic nr 9 should have been saved somewhere instead of
pic nr 10, but it was pushed upwards somewhat in between the columns, while pic
nr 10 was after 8 but moved sideways... seems a bit strange behavior to me, but
cannot pin point to a logical reason...

another screenshot with icon not aligned

another screenshot with icon not aligned, maybe makes more sense since it goes
out of the screen... maybe the problem is here somewhere...
Comment 8 Daniel Secareanu 2005-10-05 08:10:41 UTC
Other noticed behaviors... three pdf's saved on the desktop, their proportions
quite different (one is wide and short, the other is tall and narrow, the third
is almost square) while their alignment is on their left edge of the preview
icon on the desktop (normally they should be somehow aligned to center on a
virtual desktop column).

I don't see this - is this still occurring in 10.0 final?
Comment 11 Daniel Secareanu 2005-10-11 18:38:09 UTC
Yes, tested it in 10.0 final, the box version, updated from a 10.0 RC1.
Comment 12 JP Rosevear 2006-03-06 23:06:29 UTC
Federico, is this a duplicate?
Comment 13 Federico Mena Quintero 2006-03-06 23:15:31 UTC
Yeah, it's a duplicate of the general "bad icon placement" bug.
