The button problem

Here is a screenshot.

That's a sad combination of a very verbose language (with seemingly even more 
than usual verbose translations, too) together with a pretty small resolution. 
 
We can't take anything out of this dialog. Everything is needed. We could try 
to ask the translator to abbreviate the translation of that "Check 
Dependencies" button, but that of course would also affect users using higher 
resolutions. 
 
Frankly, I don't see a good solution for this particular case. 
 
Karl, Ines, any suggestion?

Proposal 1: Let this dialog stay untranslated (remove all "_( ... )" markers)
and add a note to the dialog title: "This dialog is intentionally untranslated".

Proposal 2: Try harder to remove features that are not essential.

Proposal 3: Split the dialog in 2 or 3 subdialogs.

Compromises are always necessary.  For the sake of usability you must break down
this monster -- even if it is impossible ;)

It's not a translation issue, it is a usability problem.  I know, that's not
what you want to hear.  If it is not possible to solve this complex problem, we
must close the bug with a solution tag to be invented "no software solution
possible".

Eh - no. Castrating this dialog is not an option. This is intended for 
experts, and experts want features. This is why this dialog is so complex. 
 
To the contrary, I get requests for even more features in this particular 
dialog all the time, which of course usually means even more dialog elements. 
 
So I really don't see a good compromise for languages that are this verbose 
together with a very low resolution. 

If I may.
"Annuler" could be : "non"
"Accepter" could be : "Ok"
In this particular case, a french user would understand that clicking the "Ok" 
button means : "Ok, install and do the stuff" and that the "Non" button means 
"No, I do not want to do this, bring me back home".

Craig just confirmed that Vistatec also deals with this kind of bugs. So I'm 
reassigning it to Kerry.  

@sh I know, it is not possible to solve this issue; probably using small pop-up
subdialogs is not allowed for style guide reasons.

@ comment #c7 : cheating while translating may render our translation memory
invalid.  If you really want to translate  "Cancel" in a special way in this
dialog, you must change the original text first to make it different from the
normal "Cancel".  "Cancel" must be changed to "Packager|Cancel" and the YaST
must learn to drop the "Packager|" prefix before displaying the string.  For
more info see the gettext manual.

right with the mouse.

Once the dividing bar is moved to the left the buttons will resize themselves
and they are now readable.

Eh - yes, sure, I know, I programmed that. ;-) 
 
But this is not really a solution to this problem; it is only a workaround. 
OTOH if people are happy with this workaround, so am I. 

We're not fixing this for 10.0.  If this bug still exists in openSUSE 10.2, please reopen and change the product.
