[This may be related to #115196 - submitting in case it's not]

In light of the above mentioned bug, I've set my bit depth to 16 so I can login,
but various programs crash at login.

Here's a summary:
If I login immediately after boot, GNOME hangs on the splash, normally having
started metacity, I'll attach the output of ps that shows lots of programs
having crashed, but none of the gnome_segv windows appear, so I can't take a
trace.  Killing the session, and running ldconfig normally solves this, although
this morning, gnome-panel and nautilus did still crash when they were first
started, backtraces below.

Bizarrely, even if before logging in after boot I run ldconfig, the above still
happens until I run it again after trying to login(!)

This was an upstream gtk problem, fixed in gtk 2.8.3.
