Description Chris Callanan 2005-09-18 23:39:15 UTC
Yast configure network devices locks up on IBM T41P. Can not get workstation to
recover with out force reboot.

Happened only after installing VMWARE workstation 5.

stopped vmware services and was able to get into yast and configure networks.

Happens in both yast2 and yast.
Comment 1 Michael Gross 2005-09-19 13:04:59 UTC
Can you provide more information? This would include the listing of your
network-devices (ifconfig after you stared the vmware-services) as well as the
y2logs, as far as possible. At which point exactly does it freeze? There might
be an oops, so it would also be helpful if you'd add 500 lines of your syslog!

The vmware-services bring up some network devices which might cause this problem
-- even if there is no obvious reason.

Raising severity to `major'.
Comment 2 Chris Callanan 2005-09-19 23:20:55 UTC
Further testing has found this occured in two separate builds installing the
current code for vmware. Other symptoms, were unable to run yast and unable to
reboot.

Further investigation revealed that the vmware bridge network was unable to
start, shuting down the vmware services seem to rectify the problem.

We have installed and tested vmware beta 5.5 and the issue has dissappeared.

please post logfiles as attachment next time.

have you tried this with the any-any-update from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/ ?

Comment 5 Michael Gross 2005-09-20 10:47:03 UTC
The problem actually disappeared with VMware 5.5 as you already have noticed. So
there is no real reason to fix this. If you require exactly this version, try
the update Martin pointed out. If you're using pre-build-modules, try to build
them from source, this might also fix the problem.
