Description Hu 2022-08-19 08:39:12 UTC
rh#2119048

A flaw out of bounds memory access found in the Intel iSMT SMBus host controller driver.
If local user triggers I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_DATA (with the ioctl I2C_SMBUS) with some malicious input data, it can lead to system crash.
The problem located in ismt_access() function of the drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-ismt.c.

Comment 1 Hu 2022-08-19 08:45:16 UTC
I am not 100% sure, but I think the fixing commit could be:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/690b2549b19563ec5ad53e5c82f6a944d910086e

Which makes the introducing commit: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/5e9a97b1f4491b8b65874901ad084348fcaba327

Both are already in:
- SLE15-SP4
- stable

Which would make us not affected. Would you agree?
Comment 2 Takashi Iwai 2022-08-19 08:47:08 UTC
Yes, judging from the description, it appears very likely that.

I'm going to update the patch reference for SLE15-SP4 branch.

Reassigned back to security team.
Comment 3 Hu 2022-08-19 10:51:53 UTC
Thanks, closing
Comment 6 Takashi Iwai 2022-09-12 10:52:47 UTC
It turned out that the commit 690b2549b19563ec5ad53e5c82f6a944d910086e is rather for CVE-2022-3077, and this one is for a different code path.

But, according to RH bugz entry
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2119048#c20
this is already covered in the upstream.

And I guess that the analysis by the reporter (and the fix patch) was wrong from the beginning. The upstream patch that added the block data support to the driver, the commit 001cebf03f918c85404cb76db3a60c748be5efb5
    i2c-ismt: support I2C_SMBUS_I2C_BLOCK_DATA transaction type
has already the proper check:

+       case I2C_SMBUS_I2C_BLOCK_DATA:
+ /* Make sure the length is valid */
+               if (data->block[0] < 1)
+                       data->block[0] = 1;
+
+               if (data->block[0] > I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX)
+                       data->block[0] = I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX;
+

So the bug can't hit as described in the report.
