Description Eric Davanture 2023-08-14 09:13:55 UTC
Greetings,
Since SLED 15 SP5, VLC Media Player v3.0.18 Vetinari is offered from YaST2 and works fine. Thanks a lot.
Nevertheless, I have a first .mp4 video killing VLC until next SLED reboot or kill -9.

You can find the video here: https://vimeo.com/93003441

The video is displayed correctly in Firefox but when downloaded on the hard disk and played with VLC, it just hanging VLC until next SLED reboot or kill -9.

Is there any VLC update available to avoid having this limitation on some .mp4 video files ?
Thanks a lot by now for your time and help.
Have a nice and safe day.
Eric

I thought VLC isn't provided via SLE channel. I guess you installed from the 3rd party repo?

VLC with the suggested URL works fine on my Leap 15.5 machine. Maybe you need to install some 3rd party codecs from Packman.

Greetings Takashi,
Thanks a lot for your answer.
You are right, VLC is not provided via SLE channel and SuSE do not support it also.
VLC I use comes from this repository that I reach from YaST2: SUSE-PackageHub-15-SP5-Backports-Pool
URL: https://updates.suse.com/SUSE/Backports/SLE-15-SP5_x86_64/standard?Z3YnILKwLx8R4rnKXXPUgZ8wu2XkGTxnOYjoeNeQn1aMvNj7a2LsWxWcbBNUG0JOAwqvOiyR0q_MZ7WOhezwI2EjXt5DnQwMtzzbbvFPahXCxLxyTho8kpj8hOMYzemX6cL2vZ17Jd0

Is there any place (repo.) where I should go to download the same VLC version (with the codecs) as you have in order to fix my problem ?

Thanks again for your time and support.
Have a nice and safe evening.
Eric

Thanks, now it's clerarer; it's the one in PackageHub.

It's quite possible that you need a specific codec driver / library.

As an unofficial one distributing the downstream packages, you can use the one from Packman, and that's what I checked by myself.

Or just installing openh264 might things working. But I'm not sure how vlc on PackageHub is built. Adding Scott to Cc for further insights.

I fully agree with you that vlc on PackageHub should be investigated since I have a problem when install it on SLED 15 SP5.
