Also the output of hwinfo, too. Don't know if this is useful, but this is from my var/log/messages at the time of encountering a bug with the same lockup, immediately after updating to: Kernel 5.14.21-150500.55.44.1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Of particular interest: "2024-01-18T21:26:37.988262-05:00 localhost kernel: [ 11.866020][ T186] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000010" and "Workqueue: usb_hub_wq hub_event [usbcore]" Also issues with i915 in second excerpt, but could be related to second monitor plugged in on USB? I don't know enough about how it all works, but I hope this helps. (In reply to Johan Dot from comment #9) > On non working HW: Could you use attachment for this as well? Also please give the kernel logs for working and non-working cases, too. Created attachment 872043 [details]
before update..
Joan, could you give the kernel logs showing the similar kernel Oops as well? Christian, is it a regression in your case, too? That is, the bug doesn't happen with the previous *-55.39.1 kernel? And I'm testing with *-55.44 kernel locally, but can't reproduce the problem. I thought it's because of an AMD laptop (Thinkpad T14s), but Joan's machine seems to be an AMD, too. Hmm. Do you guys see at which timing does the crash happens? I guess Jonathan's case might be different from others. It's pointing to a crash at ax88179 driver and the recent backport might be the culprit. So, Jonathan, please open another bug for yours. If it turned out to be the same cause, we can close as a dup later, too. Oh wait, I see Johan's machine has also ax888179, so it can be the same cause. If Chris' machine has the same module, it's likely the same issue. I'm going to provide a test kernel with the vert of the suspected patches. And another favor of a quick test. Could you test the kernel in OBS Kernel:SLE15-SP5 repo? http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/SLE15-SP5/pool/ This is the build from the latest SLE15-SP5 git branch. It's an unofficial build, hence you'd need to turn off Secure Boot if it's enabled. If the kernel in comment 16 still shows the same problem: now I'm building a test kernel with the revert of a patch in OBS home:tiwai:bsc1218948 repo. Once after the build finishes (takes an hour or so), the package will appear at: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/bsc1218948/pool/ Please give it a try later, if the kernel in OBS Kernel:SLE15-SP5 failed. Takashi, I'll try both this morning (USA:EST) and let you know. My system runs fine on 5.14.21-150500.228.g3903735-default(64-bit) Takashi, would you like my message log? Also do you still want me to run the Kernel in your repo? I say fine, there is clearly something still going on with the ax88179_178a driver, but the computer is running and operates, I'm just going to attach the output of dmesg as a file. dmesg output after booting kernel: 5.14.21-150500.228.g3903735-default (64-bit) on Dell XPS 9315 with ASIX AX8817
Thanks, it looks promising. So the crash seems to have been already fixed in the latest SLE15-SP5 git branch. The log still shows some errors from the driver, e.g. [ 10.632775] ax88179_178a 2-2.2:2.1 eth1: Failed to write reg index 0x0006: -32 Doesn't this appear in the previously good working kernel (*-55.39)? i.e. it's a regression? If it's a regression, I can try to reduce the patches that may have introduced it. You are correct this is in the previously working (*-55.39) version. I was running that on the 15th and this is in the message log (Same older message log you have a copy of): 2024-01-15T10:45:05.320627-05:00 localhost kernel: [604968.650256][T27888] ax88179_178a 2-2.2:2.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Failed to write reg index 0x0002: -32 2024-01-15T10:45:05.332593-05:00 localhost kernel: [604968.660616][T27888] ax88179_178a 2-2.2:2.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Failed to write reg index 0x0002: -32 So, it appears that error already existed, but hey at least the crash is fixed! Also thank you immensely for looking into this. This computer is my daily driver and I'd be kind of screwed without it. Thanks for confirmation! I'm building another kernel with the backports of a few rest upstream fixes for that driver. It's being built in OBS home:tiwai:bsc1218948-2 repo. The package will appear later at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/bsc1218948-2/pool/ Please check it and verify whether the errors are gone with it. DMESG output on kernel-defaul-5.14.21-150500.1.1.g6ef8d94, no ax88179 errors
Takashi, I have attached my dmesg output from this kernel. I do not have any errors from the driver on this kernel. Thank you! Good to hear! I pushed all fixes now to SLE15-SP5 branch. The next update kernel (likely in February) should include all those fixes. I keep this bug opened for a while until getting confirmation from others. Created attachment 872085 [details]

(In reply to Takashi Iwai from comment #2) > Could you give the full kernel log? Also the output of hwinfo, too. I also found out that this is only happening when there is no Keyboard (USB) and Display (DP) connected. Do you need something else ? OK, then the original issue of Christian's machine is completely different from others. The problem for others is about a regression of ax88179 driver (the actual crash), and this was already fixed in SLE15-SP5 git branch. Meanwhile, your problem seems related with i915 graphics driver. The hangup detected by the watchdog might be related with the firmware loading of i915. Could you try to boot with i915.enable_guc=0 boot option and see whether the problem still happens? The kernel warnings might still appear, but the hangup could be avoided by that. Also, is this a regression by the recent kernel updates? *** Bug 1219147 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Hi! Sorry for late reply.
