It seems the brightness keys (Fn+F1,Fn+F2) do not work in Tumbleweed with current 6.8 kernel series. This should have been reported rather long time ago. This has started happening in ~6.5 series

I've attached the output of "brightnessctl -l",> which only shows keyboard (caps lock) key and several non-existent LEDs on keyboard.

As far as I see, there is only "caps lock" led on this keyboard.

The screen backlight control device should be found in /sys/class/backlight.
What does it list?

Also, have you tried different acpi_backlight=xxx option?  e.g. acpi_backlight=vendor, acpi_backlight=video or acpi_backlight=native.
Comment 4 Ilgaz Öcal 2024-05-10 16:32:45 UTC
There seems to be nothing.

sudo ls -la /sys/class/backlight/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 0 May 10 19:21 .
drwxr-xr-x 70 root root 0 May 10 19:18 ..

also brightnessctl outputs even a stranger

Device 'input15::scrolllock' of class 'leds':
	Current brightness: 0 (0%)
	Max brightness: 1

output as I think Macs never had that key.

I tried all 3 values of acpi_backlight rebooting every time. Forgot to add that I try vanilla kernel too.

Thanks for caring.

If it used to work with an older kernel, could you verify that the 6.4.x kernel in OBS home:tiwai:kernel:6.4 actually gives you the backlight control?
  http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/kernel:/6.4/standard/

Basically you just need to check the contents of /sys/class/backlight. brightnessctl makes little sense without those, in anyway.

There are older kernels in OBS home:tiwai:kernel:xxx repos, too.

If there is a working kernel, please get the dmesg and the hwinfo output from there, and attach to Bugzilla for comparison.

Hello, first of all, 6.4 kernel works.

Its contents (ls -la)

OK, then could you verify that 6.5.x kernel is broken in this regard, too?

dmesg and hwinfo output of kernels beginning from 6.5 to 6.7 which brightness no longer works.

I noticed the pattern in your kernel repo, so I tested all major versions beginning with 6.5 all the way through 6.7. It is 6.7 kernel where backlight control is completely disabled, nothing appearing at /sys/class/backlight
Should check 6.7.x tree to see if there has something happened in minor version updates up to 6.7.9 (the version here)
Comment 11 Takashi Iwai 2024-05-16 08:01:13 UTC
Thanks, it makes sense now, as there has been a significant rewrite of the backlight handling code in nouveau driver for the support of GSP firmware
(commit 2274ce7e368174f7711a16a389fa256b1c89ce46).

I'm building a test kernel to revive the nva3 backlight support that was dropped by the change above. It's being built in OBS home:tiwai:bsc1223838 repo. Once after the build finishes, it'll appear at
  http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/bsc1223838/standard/

Please give it a try later.

Hello.

Unfortunately, it didn't fix. /sys/class/backlight is empty, with these lines mentioned at the dmesg (attached).

dmesg |grep backlight

Comment 13 Takashi Iwai 2024-05-16 10:02:33 UTC
OK, thanks. I'm refreshing the patch to apply a bit differently.
Another test kernel is being built in OBS home:tiwai:bsc1223838-2 repo now.
Please give it a try later again.

Here is an interesting thing. I get this back:
nv_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:10.0/0000:02:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight

I also see brightness control key working with OSD display both on KDE and Gnome
 however, it shows no effect. Screen doesn't get brighter or darker physically.

Comment 16 Takashi Iwai 2024-05-16 15:46:10 UTC
Thanks.  It's getting clearer now.

The only missing piece is the binding of bl callback for MCP79. I'm building yet another test kernel with this one-liner change. Please try the kernel in OBS home:tiwai:bsc1223838-3 repo later. (It will have no extra debug output, so let's just check whether it works or not :)
Comment 17 Ilgaz Öcal 2024-05-17 10:41:35 UTC
Hello

This latest one (-3) worked perfectly. I figured it immediately, barely being able to read boot messages. I can also set the brightness fine.
Comment 18 Takashi Iwai 2024-05-17 10:56:19 UTC
Good to hear! Basically it's a one-liner change to add the missing link for mcp79:

--- a/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nvkm/engine/disp/mcp77.c
+++ b/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nvkm/engine/disp/mcp77.c
@@ -31,6 +31,7 @@ mcp77_sor = {
        .state = g94_sor_state,
        .power = nv50_sor_power,
        .clock = nv50_sor_clock,
+       .bl = &nv50_sor_bl,
        .hdmi = &g84_sor_hdmi,
        .dp = &g94_sor_dp,
 };

I'll try to submit the fix patch to the upstream.

I backported to TW kernel and Leap 15.6 kernel now.

Let's keep this entry opened until it's properly merged to the upstream tree, though.

on current openSUSE TW 20240531-2933.1 it seems to have merged into kernel 6.9.3
