Description Stefan Hundhammer 2005-10-18 16:17:09 UTC
After installing SuSE 10.0 new on my machine (and keeping my existing ~/.kde
directory, imported via NFS) sound didn't work any more.

After some experimenting I noticed that kdesktop crashed when I reconfigured
sound with the YaST2 sound module - kdesktop blocked the sound device.

I just found the reason: In my ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc I had the following
entry:

[Desktop Icons]
Preview=imagethumbnail,clipartthumbnail,cursorthumbnail,htmlthumbnail,
gsthumbnail,designerthumbnail,fontthumbnail,svgthumbnail,picturethumbnail,
audio/,textthumbnail,webarchivethumbnail
^^^^^^
That was the problem.

Deleting that "audio/" entry restored working sound for all applications.

I have no clue how this entry got there, but I guess many KDE users who keep
their ~/.kde directory (including all who did an update, of course) will have the
same problem.

We should do something about that or at least write an SDB article.

it's still unclear what caused it for Stefan and so far I'm not aware of a single other user, so I dare to not care
