Description David Barratt 2005-10-20 20:42:13 UTC
I'm installing SuSe Linux 10 on an older eMachines box with intergrated Graphics.

I tried installing in VESA mode, but the display would go all funky during install so I tried it in Text
Mode.
(And Text Mode with Safe Settings)

Everything works fine until I get to the "Hardware Configuration" Screen.

It puls up the first thing on the list, the monitor, correctly, but hangs when all of the other hardware
remains at "Analyzing Hardware..."

Is their a workaround to this promblem?

This is my hardware specifications:

Steffen, maybe you can help here.
Comment 2 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-10-21 09:07:19 UTC
Run 'hwinfo'. Does it work?
Comment 3 David Barratt 2005-10-21 10:32:18 UTC
How do I run "hwinfo"?

I'm a newbie at this.
Comment 4 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-10-21 10:52:18 UTC
Start installation, when yast runs, go to console 2 (Alt+2 in text mode).
In the shell there type 'hwinfo'.
Comment 5 David Barratt 2005-10-21 21:31:05 UTC
Yes 'hwinfo' runs
it displays a ton of information and then goes back to the promt.
Comment 6 Steffen Winterfeldt 2005-10-24 08:49:28 UTC
Ok, thanks. So it looks like hardware detection is not the problem.

David, if you say it hangs, do you mean the computer is completely dead or
the install just does not continue (and you can still switch to console 2
via Alt+2 [or Ctrl+Alt+2 if in graphics mode])?

OTOH there might be a problem with your video hardware. Maybe it's possible
to skip the graphics config, our yast people should know.
Comment 7 Michael Radziej 2005-10-24 09:49:29 UTC
In addition, can you please attach the /var/log/YaST2 directory (as a tar file)?
Please take a look at http://www.opensuse.org/Bug_Reporting_FAQ#YaST
if you have any questions about this.
Comment 8 Marcus Schaefer 2005-10-24 13:02:40 UTC
could you send me the output of the command

   sax2 -p

what happens if you call

   sax2 -r

does it work ? if yes please send the log file

   /var/log/SaX.log

Thanks
Comment 9 David Barratt 2005-10-24 14:45:49 UTC
The system completley hangs at "Hardware Configureation"

The keyboard does not respond. Hitting ALT+F2 (Text Mode) does nothing.
Comment 10 Marcus Schaefer 2005-10-25 10:40:31 UTC
so the system crashed :( If you don't mind please provide the
file /var/log/Xorg.*.log after your system is up again
Comment 11 Stefan Dirsch 2005-11-10 15:47:06 UTC

The output of both:
sax2 -p
and
sax2 -r

is identical, the output is:
bash: sax2: command not found
Comment 15 Stefan Dirsch 2005-11-11 17:23:08 UTC
Nobody asked for y2logs ...
Comment 16 Stefan Dirsch 2005-11-11 17:24:00 UTC
What kind of installation is this when even sax2 is not installed? Install it with YaST2 first.
Comment 17 David Barratt 2005-11-11 17:36:46 UTC
I apologize for my ignorcance..

Ok, so install Suse until it crashes, restart without any CDs in...
and then run sax2 at the prompt
ok, I got a bit ahead of myself.

(back in a flash)

Sax Log

Yes, both commands ran.
The first command came up with one line I belive telling me the graphics were Intel Graphics
the second command started Sax and I was displayed with a background image and a message box that asked me if the display setting were correct.
I pressed "OK" and was returned to the Prompt.

Comment 21 Stefan Dirsch 2005-11-11 20:05:58 UTC
I think we can close this now as fixed. For whatever reasons sax2 has not been installed during installation.
