I use an HP DDS3 SCSI-2 DAT drive for backup. It is connected to an Adaptec 2940
Ultra SCSI adapter. Under SuSE 10.0 I can no longer (de)activate the drive's
hardware compression:

/usr/bin/mt -f /dev/nst0 datcompression 0
Can't write mode page.
mt: /dev/nst0: No such file or directory

This and the following commands are all issued as user root. /dev/nst0 exists
and it is possible to read from / write to the tape. At the same time, the
following message is written to /var/log/messages:

Oct 20 23:21:21 kato kernel: program mt is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please
convert it to SG_IO

Backup solution: Switch over to /usr/bin/mtst from the mt_st package. Note that
the syntax of this command differs slightly from that of /usr/bin/mt, e.g.

/usr/bin/mt datcompression 2 

is equivalent to

/usr/bin/mtst compression 1

Closing old LATER+REMIND bugs as WONTFIX - if you still plan to work on it, feel free to reopen and set to ASSIGNED.

In case the report saw repeated reopen comments, it's due to bugzilla timing out on the huge request ;(
