Description Davor Horvatic 2005-10-22 15:11:21 UTC
I konw that there is bug 116763 related to my issue, but I have
different response from my laptop. I installed SuSE 10 on HP nx8220
with ACPI set to off as specified. (I followed HP instructions and Novell
recomendations to the letter.) Installation was flawless and hardware
detection best so far.

Problem is that when I try to shutdown or restart at the end of the process
everithing frezzes, same thing happens when I set ACPI=on in GRUB. Sistem does
not boot. I have just blank screen. If I need to supply some listing just ask.

The notebook in question is
HP COMPAQ NX8220, PY515EA.

Can you try kernel parameter "reboot=hard", "reboot=warm", "reboot=cold" and "reboot=bios" and tell us if one of them works? Decreasing severity, since this is not a MAJOR problem.
Comment 3 Davor Horvatic 2005-10-24 08:59:59 UTC
I can try, "reboot=..." option should be placed in GRUB config in the
same line as acpi=off ?
Comment 4 Hubert Mantel 2005-10-24 09:11:24 UTC
You don't need to add it permanently. Just try the various parameters, you can add them manually when booting the machine.
Comment 5 Davor Horvatic 2005-10-24 11:11:59 UTC
OK one issue solved with "reboot=bios" system is normaly rebooting.
What about second issue, acpi=on causes system not to boot at all.
It leaves blank screen and I have to hold power off button for 10s
to turn laptop off.
Comment 6 Davor Horvatic 2005-10-24 12:03:45 UTC
One more thing, what is the parameter for shutdown similar to
reboot=bios ? Because system still frezzes when I select Shudown instead
reboot.
Comment 7 Hubert Mantel 2005-10-24 14:36:14 UTC
I fear this one will need ACPI to work. Re-assigning.
Comment 8 Thomas Renninger 2005-10-24 14:44:10 UTC
#5 and #6 should already be fixed.
Could you please try kernel:
ftp.suse.com/pub/people/trenn/10_0_kernel_reboot_fix/kernel-default-2.6.13-2.i586.rpm
Comment 9 Davor Horvatic 2005-10-24 17:40:19 UTC
I'll try this kernel first thing tomorrow morning when I'll have
broad-band connection.
Can you tell me proper procedure for trying out this kernel,
i.e. just rpm -U or ... ? Because current kernel version is
2.6.13-15.

ACPI is fixed to ?
Comment 10 Thomas Renninger 2005-10-25 07:07:20 UTC
Yes, as this has only two minor fixes it is save to override the old kernel with:
rpm -Uvh kernel-*.rpm --force (not sure whether the force is needed...).
In this case you should not need to adjust /boot/grub/menu.lst.

You should be able to boot without pci=noacpi (no guarantee, though).
Sorry, #5 could possibly fixed, but I think you will still need the reboot=bios param (You could give it a try without...).
Comment 11 Michael Jonsson 2005-10-25 08:46:57 UTC
Hi,

I have the same problem, after I install the kernel I get the ACPI up and running.
But now the vmware is not working so I need det kernel source for 2.6.13-2 so I can reconfig the vmware installation.

Comment 12 Thomas Renninger 2005-10-25 11:03:30 UTC
This kernel shouldn't mess up vmware, it only has a little pci=noacpi (which shouldn't boot with the old kernel when the param is missing) and a rather safe reboot/shutdown fix.
Use the same boot options (maybe without pci=noacpi something else goes still wrong?) you used when vmware worked and it should still work.

I will close this one now. If there should be any other issues left or something still be unfixed, please open a separate bug, so that we don't loose the overview...

If you could be so kind and set/add a short article on:
http://www.opensuse.org/HCL/Laptops/HP
This could be quite helpful for others ...
Comment 13 Davor Horvatic 2005-10-25 11:52:07 UTC
It is fixed I tried kernel, ACPI is working now, rebooting is working,
I left reboot=bios. And I'm editing opensuse article right now.

This change will be incorporated in next kernel update via YOU ?
Comment 14 Thomas Renninger 2005-10-25 12:52:58 UTC
Yes, I wonder why it hasn't been released yet, I think it will be done as soon as aj comes back from holiday...
