Applets errors out with message "The panel encountered a problem while loading
OAFIID:GNOME_xxxApplet"

These applets (and more) will not start;
Battery Charge Monitor
Clock
Notification Area

Packaging issue - resolved for Alpha 3 already.  As a work around install gnome-panel-devel and gnome-applets-devel.
