Gnome-Maintainers: Can you help here? What information do you require? Looks like a driver issue to me. (In reply to comment #2) > Looks like a driver issue to me. > Could this mean the pwc module found when running lsmod is outdated? If so then is there a way to verify what version of the pwc module is installed in the SUSE Linux kernel via the terminal? http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/files/ list the current version as 10.0.9 with release date November 4, 2005. Prior to installing this version I'd like to clarify what version of pwc came with the updated kernel via YAST Online Update. Greg, can you help with this, please? Can you provide the output of /proc/bus/usb/devices with the camera plugged in? (In reply to comment #5) > Can you provide the output of /proc/bus/usb/devices with the camera plugged in? > Sorry for my ignorance but can you explain how I should run that output in the terminal? When I open the file from the directory you provided manually with Kate the file is blank. I've also tried installing an updated module "kernel-module-pwc-OpenSuse10.0-2.6.13-15-default-10.0.9-1.i586.rpm" from http://home.tiscali.be/raoul.linux/downloadSuSE10.0.htm but the camera is still showing a black display when enabled. I've tried several chat messengers, the latest being Kopete for KDE 3.5 and all show the same black display. Sorry, how about the output of 'lsusb -v' instead? And if you are using external kernel modules, there's nothing we can do here to help you out, I suggest you ask the authors of that driver. Created attachment 59342 [details]

As for the externel pwc module that was a failed attempt to resolve a possible outdated module that came with the kernel provided with SUSE Linux 10.0. Greg, Resolved the issue by removing the outdated pwc module that comes with the kernel in SUSE Linux 10 and installed the updated pwc module version 10.0.9. Logitech Quickcam Orbit functions properly with this latest pwc module though pan/tilt doesn't. I've been informed this type of camera with servo motors requires the module set-pwc to be installed which is not a major necessity. I've successfully tested the following chat and video conference applications: AMSN Messenger, GnomeMeeting and CamStream. Is it possible for Novell when providing kernel patch releases via YAST Online Update to also update the pwc module? Due to Novell is competiting heavly for the desktop market both in enterprise and private sectors this would make financial sense. Both markets use web cameras whether to video conference with clients, students, doctors, etc or just chat with their friends and family. Novell could be a leader by providing easy access with such tools. No, we need the pwc driver to be in the main kernel tree. There are a number of reasons why the out-of-tree driver is not there, and because of that, we have to stick with the version that we have. If you want to help change this, go pester the current pwc driver author to update the in-kernel version of the driver. |
