Description john and 2005-11-11 04:28:17 UTC
Dear support,

We just want to report a bug that might be useful for Suse to improve the stability of Linux. Our Linux sometimes crashes, especially when we are under xdmcp connection using cygwin.

Although intermittent, this issue forces us to press reset button and causes some corruptions in the reiserfs. As a result, it forces us to rebuild the tree.

Thank you.
Kind regards,
John

Please don't inline large logfiles, use the attachment feature instead.

I'm not quite sure if we can support this. Werner?
Comment 3 Dr. Werner Fink 2005-11-11 16:27:35 UTC
Hmmm ... currently I see a kernel problem not an xdm
problem. Before I analyse xdm problem the kernel Oops
should be solved first, shouldn't it?

Add X11 maintainer and my self to CC for traceing
and reassign to the kernel people.

Cygwin has nothing to do with SUSE...
John: How is SUSE Linux involved here?
Comment 5 john and 2005-11-14 01:11:24 UTC
http://x.cygwin.com/

Cygwin is used as an xdmcp client. It runs under MS Windows environment, and there is no cygwin installation done in the server side (SUSE). This means it's hard for me to blame the cygwin as causing the crash. Moreover, I logged into SUSE as a normal user (not root)

So, my first suspect the problem is on the server side, not the client, especially in the logfile I also found:
* Nov 11 08:39:01 hstauto kernel: Kernel BUG at "mm/rmap.c":493
* Nov 11 11:21:08 hstauto kernel: Kernel BUG at "mm/prio_tree.c":125

Thanks.
John

Chris: Please add a comment here. Can we support that? You should decide what to do here.
Comment 7 Chris L Mason 2005-11-15 00:51:01 UTC
The kernel is tainted with an unsupported module, which one was causing this?

The real problem is not the oops, these messages are very serious:

Nov 11 08:39:00 hstauto kernel: swap_free: Bad swap file entry 800000000000000
Nov 11 08:39:00 hstauto kernel: swap_free: Bad swap file entry 800000000000000

Nov 11 08:39:00 hstauto kernel: swap_free: Bad swap offset entry ffff81006aae30

What were you doing to the system to trigger these?
Comment 8 john and 2005-11-15 06:33:25 UTC
Thanks for this question. It remembers me that issuing 'sync' command could also cause the crash (it happened once).

In general, the crash happens during idle time.

I had tried to turn off screen saver and all power management features in BIOS, but somehow it was still unpredicted.

John? Chris has asked about an unsupported module your kernel has
loaded. Which modules are you using?
Comment 10 Chris L Mason 2005-11-15 16:17:09 UTC
Ok, could you please run with swap disabled and see if the problem goes away?
Comment 11 john and 2005-11-16 03:52:39 UTC
Chris, thanks. We'll try to disable the swap.

Werner, as far as I remember, I did not install any external modules, except nvidia vga driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_1.0-7676.html)

I attach the dmesg log for your reference.
Thanks.

Hi, below are the last lines before I pressed the reset button this morning.

The last issued command was "scp -r".
I was copying a bunch of files to other server.
After certain time, it was hanging.
The swap was disabled (according to your suggestion)

Thanks.

I propose to check this with latest NVIDIA driver and/or SUSE 10.1(Beta8 has been released) again.

Still no feedback after more than a month (see my comment #15). I suggest to close this one as WONTFIX.

Thanks for the comment, it did not help.
It seems caused by power management.

The default scheme for cpuspeed is dynamic scaling.
That's the culprit.

After changing it to performance, the problem is gone.
Verified with Suse 10.1 as well.

John

There has been a patch to execute ondemand governor's stuff in an own workqueue.
This patch came in quite late (after 10.1 before SLES/SLED 10 AFAIK). With an update to the latest kernel update you should have it.

IIRC mainly AMD CPUs were affected and there mainly (only?) Dual Cores.
I remember on 10.0 we checked for SMP+AMD and then used the userspace governor.

This might be related and if it should be fixed.
This might also be unrelated. Then maybe an update to the latest BIOS helps?

The /var/log/messages portion from comment #1 doesn't say much...
A complete dmesg after a fresh reboot (after powernow-k8 module got loaded and powersaved started) possibly reveals something. But please try latest kernel and BIOS first.

Please reopen the bug if you can provide the needed information, thanks.
