Updatung (specially from older versions) is always critical to a certain degree. GRUB does not overwrite your old bootloader if you configure YaST not to do so. If it does, it is also stated in the summarize screen before the actual installation takes place. Notebooks are especially complicated here. I will close this bug if there is no specific problem here. If so, please state it (create a single[!] report for each problem) and attach the required information (logfiles, hardware information, ...).
