I was installing Alpha4 i386 OSS. When booting after the 1st CD, the graphical boot menu came up and when it timed out, the system froze.
I was able to proceed by deleting the reference to /boot/message from /boot/grub/menu.lst

The machine has an AMD K6 3D processor, perhaps it got an instruction for a newer processor?

Finally installed a non minimal distro to check it. It works.
