I was in vacation, sorry for my late response. It seems to be a hardware problem and not a usability issue. There is less information to make any suggestion. Does a previous version of SUSE LINUX work properly? Can you provide a hardware-information output (hwinfo)? what is the last thing you can see before it freeze? try safe settings. please make a ram test. Hi, I understand your comments - I'm an EE and often see similar problems that are very hard to debug. Unfortunately I don't have much more info as the system hangs before I can do anything. I've tried safe settings, level 3 (console login only) and they all hang ... all I can do is reboot. The install got me to a login screen, but my keyboard and mouse were dead (only the power button worked ... :-)). This machine is set up for dual boot, and Windows works fine. I also installed Fedora Core 4 with no problems - it really seems to be SUSE specific. I have tried changing APM / ACPI settings (at the boot prompt), and they seem to have an impact. It's been a while now, but I believe it was ACPI=off (or something similar) that caused the machine to hang before it even starts to boot. So it does seem somehow ACPI / APM related. Any ideas? Any thing I can try? Unfortunately it just hangs and I really can't do much to debug it (or to help you out). Thanks! You could at least copy/photograph the kernel messages output before the freeze and of the crash itself. If this cannot be provided, there is little we can do here, sorry. If you don't really require ACPI and disabling ACPI does the trick, you should do so. Is there any way to log this information to a file (like on a floppy) so I can send it to you? Unfortunately the machine completely hangs so I can't get the log / status info out. FYI - turning ACPI off hangs the machine even before boot, so this isn's a work around. I did try a live Ubuntu CD and it boots OK, but the live SUSE DVD doesn't ... :-(. Thanks! Are we talking about the live-DVD or the installation system? Boot with splash=verbose, this will show all boot-messages. If the system does not hang before it can write /var/log/boot.msg, you can retrieve this file and attach it here. If it does not contain the information, you can just photograph the screen or write down the messages. Well, I have a fix (sort of). A friend of mine loaned me his retail version of SUSE 10.0 to try and it worked just fine, so there is something somehow messed up with the downloadable version. Should this be the case? Thanks! the base is the same, the only difference is the software selection. Depends on which version you donwloaded, the OSS version contains only OSS. maybe this is a media problem. i will close the bug now, i found no other reports like that. If you find out something new, please reopen the bug. Thanks! |
