Using the VPN client togehter with NetworkManager causes troubles, as both are trying to manage the network interface in a conflicting way (see bug #138014).
The NetworkManager has nice plugin support (currently used by OpenVPN and a Cisco VPN plugins) that allows to integrate the Novell VPN support easily with smooth operation as the result.

The NetworkManager-novellvpn package satisfies this.
