Description Michael Dreher 2005-12-30 00:29:26 UTC
after upgrading from suse 9.2 to 10.0, there is no sound.

the modules are loaded. the system beep works.
the mixer is OK.
when I do "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav", the cursor
comes back after some seconds, but there is no sound
(neither the speakers in the notebook nor from the headphones).

it was working in Suse 9.2

I will attach the outputs of
dmesg,
lsmod,
amixer,
hwinfo --sound
lspci -vv

Try toggle 'Line Jack Sense' and / or 'External Amplifier' in alsamixer.
Comment 9 Michael Dreher 2006-01-04 13:02:52 UTC
I tried all 4 possibilities, and "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav"
was always silent.
Comment 10 Takashi Iwai 2006-01-05 18:19:38 UTC
Did you turn off 'Headphone Jack Sense', too?
Comment 11 Michael Dreher 2006-01-06 00:13:44 UTC
I did not try this before.
Now I did, and the following configuration is the only one that works:
Headphone Jack Sense = off
Line Jack Sense = off

The value of "External Amplifier" does not matter.

Therefore, I have one or two wishes/questions:
* other defaults (if possible)
* better documentation (for instance, a more informative help text in YaST) ?

Maybe, other users are falling over this issue, too.
Thank you for your help.

The default values are both off, but they were turned on (accidentally?) by some apps. I'll remove these controls for specific devices to avoid such problems in the future version.
