I'm trying to track down a problem and thought I would check the changelog for nfs-utils. A new version was available in 10.1 alpha 4: 1.0.7-17 instead of 10.0's 1.0.7-13. Upon inspection, however, I found that the changelog did not contain version or release numbers in the changelog, and had to resort to comparing the changelog output with the installed package. More often is the case that the changelog is not updated at all, with notes *or* version/release information. This makes it rather frustrating to try and determine just /what/ has changed from version to version (or rpm release to rpm release).

I'm filing this bug in the hopes that somebody recognizes that it's important to keep rpm changelogs up to date, including some indication of version or release numbers, even moreso now with OpenSUSE. I've been a long-time supporter (financially, too!) of SuSE I've won over quite a few people to SUSE because of it's quality, but this is one area that I feel that SUSE could improve on. Nobody doubts how much work goes on, but something that seems so small can really make a big difference sometimes.

If there are changes to a packages, our build process makes sure that there is always a new changelog entry. If there is only a higher release number, but no changelog, this package was only recompiled with a new compiler, glibc or whatever, but no changes where done to the sources or spec file.

Generally: For such complaints please write an email to the package maintainer unless you encounter a real bug. In this case, the maintainer is Ruediger Oertel (ro@suse.de), I took him into CC so he will receive a mail about this.
