Description laurent pantaloni 2006-01-15 22:01:09 UTC
I tried to connect my (recently repaired) iPod on my Suse Box.
The "ipod" device never appeared. I then had a look at the trace file and the following sequence appears :

Jan 15 22:52:00 Suse kernel: usb 3-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
Jan 15 22:52:00 Suse kernel: scsi2477 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Jan 15 22:52:00 Suse kernel: usb-storage: device found at 3
Jan 15 22:52:00 Suse kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Jan 15 22:52:00 Suse kernel: usb 3-6: USB disconnect, address 3
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb 3-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: scsi2478 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb-storage: device found at 5
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb 3-6: USB disconnect, address 5
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb 3-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: scsi2479 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb-storage: device found at 6
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Jan 15 22:52:01 Suse kernel: usb 3-6: USB disconnect, address 6

it goes on and on and on untill it reaches "address 127". At this point, it restart at the beginning. This loop never ends.

uname -a gives the following :
Linux Suse 2.6.13-15.7-default #1 Tue Nov 29 14:32:29 UTC 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

This did not happened again after a reboot.
The media was correctly mounted on "/media/ipod"

If the device disconnects so frequently, this really sounds like an electrical
issue (flaky connection), or low voltage (you've plugged this into a self-powered
hub.

The fact that it works every once in a while, also leads me to blame the hardware.

There's really nothing that I know of that can help this out, try different USB
ports, not using a hub (if you are), and maybe a different docking station.

Does this also happen with this same hardware on other machines?
