You might consider not using subfs with your floppy, try setting this to auto and try the mount again.

For the problem itself you should attach `hwinfo --floppy' and 200 lines of your syslog in /var/log/messages. Thanks.

I changed subfs to auto and added users to the /dev/fd0 line.  I also changed the permissions to the My Computer folder on the desktop and to the floppy icon inside My Computer.  When I restarted the computer I could access my floppy.  I don't know which one fixed it.  This should be looked at to determine why the My Computer icon has problems.  I had a similar problem with 9.3 but there I gave up and used a workaround.  I put a shortcut to /media on my desktop and that worked so I never solved the My Computer issue.  On 10 the media solution didn't work so I had to stick to it.

how was the floppy formated?

The floppy was formatted on a Windows XP Machine and had files on it that had been saved from an instance of Linspire.  I had backed up my Kmymoney file and then installed Suse 10.  I was attempting to save the Kmymoney file to the harddrive.  I have a friend who just installed Suse 10 from DVD and he has no problems.  I have had the My Computer problem on three computers.  Could it have anything to do with the motherboard or the floppy controller on a older board?

The permissions for the My Computer folder were set to allow read only for users and groups.  The Floppy icon inside was set to forbidden for users and groups.  I changed these in root to be read and write.  I then had to reboot and now I can access the floppy through My Computer.  I'm not sure if that is what did it however because I had also made the fstab changes that you and others had suggested.

Sorry about the files, I'll remember to attach .txt next time.

OK, this seems to be a problem either with subfs (kernel) or how KDE handles this access. I'll take both kernel- and KDE-maintainers into CC for comments.

Jim: You suppose it's a hardware problem?

I'm not sure.  I have had this problem on two computers with Gigabyte motherboards I built four years ago and on a six year old Compaq my sister owns.  In Suse 9.3 I still have not resolved the issue but in 10 the above resolutions worked.  My friend built a computer with AMD 64bit and he used the DVD installation.  His setup works perfectly.  I can get more accurate specs if you want them, I'm not at home right now.

Maby it's a problem with the floppy controller used on these boards. It's a wide shot, but just to be on the safe side, please add /var/log/boot.msg here.

well, he changed from the suse default (subfs) to auto, which of course works. we had a media manager crash regarding that (reported somewhere and I thought we issued an update for that) but I can't find the bugid right now..

Jim: Does the problem still exist? Can you check out if this problem does still exist in 10.1 latest Beta? AFAIK subfs will ne dropped anyway ;)

My issue with 10 is indeed solved.  The fixes described above corrected the issue.  The bigger question at hand is why does this happen?  I can't tell you but I will continue to supply whatever help I can.  The solution above did not solve the problem with 9.3 but I have a workaround there.  I created a link on my desktop to /Media and I can mount floppies from there.  Eventually I will upgrade to 10 on my machine but have not at this time.  Since I now have a stable fully functioning load on my wife's machine I will not be upgrading her anytime soon.  When I go to 10 on my machine I will go to the latest stable version and will let you know.

We're no longer using subfs in SL10.1, so I would rather not spend many cycles debugging it here.  I think the 10.1 solution will be much nicer.
