The network manager applet is also visible when I don“t use network manager.
IMHO this is useless and wastes space in the tray are, so it should only be visible if I use network manager.

Ugh, I don't think it's resolved.  I use traditional method, yet I see the icon for Network Manager in tray.

Actually I don't see any icon, just a space.  When right-clicking the space I see that it belongs to Network Manager.

do you have this in your rpm changelog of Networkmanager-kde ? I highly doubt so, because its not on beta3, it will be in beta4:
