Description Jens Herden 2006-02-09 10:24:38 UTC
When I boot from CD 1 the screen is not detected correctly on my Inspiron 500m. I can not select 1024x768 for the screen resolution, only 800x600, vesa and textmode are available.

However if I add vga=0x305 at the bootprompt I get the correct resolution.
This was the same in SL 10.0 already.

Please attach `hwinfo --monitor' as well as the yast logfiles.

Yast2 log files

Here are the wanted files, I hope they can help.
Comment 4 Marcus Schaefer 2006-02-10 08:26:21 UTC
I assume the VESA BIOS of your system couldn't be accessed via
linuxrc.
Comment 5 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-02-10 08:41:27 UTC
That's basically bug 144742 comment 21.

Please attach the log of 'hwinfo --vbe --log=xxx'.

Comment 7 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-02-10 16:23:39 UTC
Thanks. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't offer 1024x768.
You're sure it is not there?
Comment 8 Jens Herden 2006-02-11 03:54:32 UTC
I just tried again. Boot from CD 1 gives me only three choices text mode, vesa and 800x600 :-(
How can I help to track this down?
Comment 9 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-02-13 10:21:58 UTC
What's the vga option it uses when you select 800x600?
Comment 10 Jens Herden 2006-02-13 11:18:13 UTC
The used option is vga=0x303

Another message I observed immediately before switching to GUI mode is:

Found a Linux console terminal on /dev/console (100 columns x 37 lines)
Please supply a config file.

This sounds like a kind of problem report but it might be totally unrelated.
Comment 11 Jens Herden 2006-02-19 14:50:52 UTC
Some additional information from installing beta4:
- the problem is still there, no 1024x768 resolution available after boot
- but Yast does detect it! When I manually configure the bootloader I get the 1024x768 in the drop-down box as an option.
Comment 12 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-02-20 14:18:32 UTC
Yes, I know. That's exactly what puzzles me.
Comment 13 Steffen Winterfeldt 2006-03-14 15:37:48 UTC
I've looked at the code again and can't find any obvious reason it leaves
out 1024x768 in the boot loader but lists it in hwinfo.

Sorry, there's nothing I can do at this point without having such a machine
for testing.
Comment 14 Jens Herden 2006-03-15 00:34:01 UTC
Never mind, I know how to work around this, so no big deal for me.
Thanks for looking in it.
