Description Olof Englund 2006-02-12 18:15:24 UTC
As the installation process reaches the hardware detection phase, the screen goes black and the system chrashes (console switching doesn't work). The system boots but with unfinished settings - no sound, generic monitor, VESA, strange keyboard behaviour, etc.

The computer in question has an integrated display controller as well as a PCI display adapter. The PCI card is the one in use because of the increase in speed (the internal controller apparently taxes the bus which is already pretty slow :p)

There is nothing wrong with the hardware - the system ran fine using Gentoo using either the built-in display controller or the PCI card.

The built in controller is a SIS 530 on a GA-5SMM motherboard. The PCI card is a S3 968.

I'll only have the PC for a day or two so further testing on my end will be limited.

Oh, I forgot - trying to set up the display settings from the control center results in the same black screen and crashing the system.

I had to get the machine up and running quickly and resorted to installing Mandriva (which btw wouldn't go into graphical install mode but configured properly). Didn't know about the YaST log..I'm sorry I can't help with solving this one :-/
