Description Stephan Binner 2006-02-16 11:20:59 UTC
kdm requests root password for shutdown and reboot options in 10.1 Beta 3.95. I hear it should only do so on SLES product.

please check the submitted SuSEconfig.kdm3

Probably not really my problem (since we have journaling file systems, so I don't suffer much if someone at my home simply powers off because they don't have the root password), but to require the root password for shutting down the computer, especially on a desktop, is asking for a lot of complaints. I do hope you're prepared to handle the bugzilla-load...

There is an implicit security issue here, though: This policy provokes a wider spreading of the root password than neccessary, which is normally not wanted.

Rasmus: #144356 !
Comment 6 Rasmus Plewe 2006-02-17 21:21:56 UTC
Coolo: I didn't reopen the bug, so I didn't ask for action. I read #144356, I understood the descision, and I disagree. So I documented my disagreement (probably in the wrong bug, but so what?), and that's it.

Could you please comment on bug #144356, I am not allowed to read it.

Why not work as root, so you don't have to enter the password to shutdown ...
Just a joke.

Besides, if I switch to console mode, I can stop the system with ctr-alt-del.
so it shouldn't ask roots password if ctrl-alt-del action is to halt or reboot.
Comment 9 Stephan Binner 2006-02-22 19:13:29 UTC
SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 5 doesn't ask for root password for reboot/shutdown.
Comment 10 Christoph Thiel 2006-03-08 14:26:55 UTC
test build 606 (SUSE Linux 10.1 installation) ask for a pass again.
Comment 11 Stephan Kulow 2006-03-09 11:13:52 UTC
work around submitted for beta8 - the reason why this would happen is still unclear though
