The Famous and Most Wanted EPS Version(TM)

Description Forgotten User OS1JNCFbCX 2006-02-18 18:58:18 UTC
This is not really about the wiki but there is no appropriate component availlable for this issue.

Is it permitted to use the openSUSE logo as it is displayed on www.opensuse.org in the upper left corner for slides on FOSDEM related to topics of the openSUSE project?

If this is the case, is there a vectorized version of this logo availlable (preferable eps file)? The bitmap version looks pretty ugly on the slides.
Comment 1 Forgotten User OS1JNCFbCX 2006-02-18 22:21:58 UTC
BTW: The style would look like this: http://pi3.informatik.uni-mannheim.de/~schiele/opensusetest.pdf

Andreas?
Adrian?
Comment 3 Adrian Schröter 2006-02-20 12:46:48 UTC
After discussion with Michael Loeffler:

It is okay to use it as long the presentation states that it is an opinion of
a single person or some group, but not an official decision by the project.

Is this fine with you ?
Comment 4 Forgotten User OS1JNCFbCX 2006-02-20 12:59:27 UTC
This is ok for me. I will then just add an additional legal disclaimer slide.

But I have to reopen this bug as it is only partially resolved. The legal point is clear now but there remains the question whether a vectorized version (preferable eps file) could be provided for better quality.
Comment 5 Martin Lasarsch 2006-02-20 14:03:20 UTC
i'm not aware of an eps file, and yes i already searched for a vector pic. But i found something else (don't ask) something, i made i bigger .png of it ...

If you still need a bigger one, i can try again ...

This version has an acceptable resolution for this purpose but still has the general drawbacks of every raster image format: It does either look ugly or suffers from size bloat or both. And some versions of Acrobat Reader even try to antialias all raster images that are included in a PDF file and that does look _really_ ugly.

Who has done that logo? Shouldn't this person have the sources and one might _ask_ him for an EPS file instead of just searching around somewhere? Every tool for graphic design I am aware of can easily export vectorized eps files.

I mean using a raster image as input for style files is just like sending mails in MS Word format. --- Unnecesarry bloat and inflexible.
Comment 9 Michael Gross 2006-02-20 15:37:24 UTC
AFAIK there is no ``official'' logo with a higher resoultion but I will investigate a little further. The logo Martin attached was also no official logo.
Comment 10 Forgotten User OS1JNCFbCX 2006-02-20 15:49:56 UTC
Huh? The logo that is on the web site was once created by some human being, isn't it? (I suppose it didn't fall out of the stars, right?) So what's that about the "official" logo? Why can't just someone _ask_ this human being about an eps file? To be honest I can't understand the problem that is involved in that process. Maybe someone could explain. He also could explain what's the exact difference of an "official" logo and a logo that is not "official".

original openSUSE svg, gzipped

It does not yet exist as eps, but it was created as svg.

forget to close ...
Comment 13 Michael Gross 2006-02-20 16:06:42 UTC
I will attach a PDF document with several vector-based logos.
Furthermore I'm adding Silke for a comment.

Silke: We should create some kind of logo page with several formats and pre-sized logos here. Are you the right person to talk to? The original creator of the logo seems to have left the company.

Robert: Normally such issues are not handled in bugzilla, for such purposes we have mailing lists (...). And I am not responsible at all for such issues. Hence if you are not satisfied about how this is handled, we can close it as INVALID as well.
Comment 14 Michael Gross 2006-02-20 16:07:35 UTC
Adrian: I want to keep this open until Silke gave a comment, this will prevent further requests of that sort.

Very excellent! The svg Adrian provided was exactly what was needed. I converted this now to eps and have exactly what was needed. If you want to have the eps file as well, I can attach it here.
Comment 17 Martin Lasarsch 2006-02-20 19:02:21 UTC
i will close this bug now ... maybe we should think about a public place to put it. (if there isnt already one :-) )
Comment 18 Michael Gross 2006-02-21 11:10:55 UTC
Robert: Just in the case, attach it here.

Comment 21 Juergen Weigert 2006-06-29 11:21:38 UTC
Michael, please add Licenese terms for the opensuse logo here, once decided.
Comment 22 Michael Loeffler 2007-05-22 09:12:25 UTC
The logo should be put on: http://en.opensuse.org/Buttons

It's already available on Novell pages under this terms:
http://www.novell.com/company/legal/permission/

And we should add this terms to the Buttons page as well.

Comment 25 Juergen Weigert 2009-02-18 16:24:14 UTC
added a pointer to http://en.opensuse.org/Buttons
Comment 26 Joe Brockmeier 2009-03-23 15:41:54 UTC
The license terms are here: http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Trademark_Guidelines.

I don't see any reason for this to remain open.
