for some reason the permissions on .ICEauthority get messed up, and is owned by root exclusively. I'm sorry I don't know any more details, or why this occured. I will try to file it again if it does.

Let me guess: You are running a KDE application in superuser mode from your Gnome session?

If yes, then this is a duplicate of bug 177480.
