Description Ruediger Oertel 2007-06-13 10:55:25 UTC
getcfg has still not been updated to work on 10.3,
HWD_INTERFACETYPE_0 is displayed as "invalid"

even the hack of setting WIRELESS="yes" in ifcfg-wlan-$ID does
not help any more, not even the ESSID get's set for the interface.

-> ifup does not work at all (driver madwifi, if that matters)

I am also running into a problem similar to this. I have a HP Pavilion with an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ with 2GB of Memory. I have installed (all x86-64):
Novell Linux 10.0 (which didn't automatically recognize my NIC), SLED 10 (fine), SLED 10sp1 (fine), openSUSE 10.2 (fine), openSuSE 10.3alpha4+ (current problem).

My system 'freezes up' whenever I try to access the internet, configure the NIC through YAST, configuring the SuSEfirewall, or even when I ping itself or the wireless router.

I only have one network card, a SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. It will freeze during the installation process when it tries to configure the NIC.

If I let it find my NIC automatically it find it as "Hewlett-Packard SiS 900...." and if I select it manually it shows up as the same thing minus the "Hewlett-Packard" part, and neither help with problem.

I can't find much in my "/var/log/-log's". I will include them if anyone thinks a specific one would help.

I have found that My system is much more stable if I skip a lot of the initial install configurations, and piece by piece (since it freezes up during most configurations (especially while running suseconfig at the end most often during the firewall part).

But still if I try to go to a website with Firefox, Konquerer, or Opera. I have uninstalled each of these with out any change. I can use Konquerer just fine while browsing my filesystem, but if I type in a URL it freezes immidiately. If I ping anything, it will return successfully 4-7 time before freezing.

Ryan, your problem is completely unrelated to this bug report. It looks loke you have a hardware problem, maybe your memory is corrupt. I suggest to test the memory. If you can sort out a hardware problem for sure and your problem persists then file a new bug report, but don't discuss that here.

This bug is about broken /sbin/getcfg.
I'm currently working on getting rid of getcfg completely. We don't need that anymore since we have reliable persistant interface names. Interface configurations will be named ifcfg-<interface> again from 10.3 on.
