Description Forgotten User --EoyBps8f 2007-08-25 17:29:17 UTC
I had kernel-default installed and opensuse updater showed an update for iwlwifi. The text below the update-list just stated something about wifi, so I installed it. However, without any notification kernel-bigsmp was installed.

Since installing a new kernel should always warn the user before actually doing so, opensuse updater should do so too.

Can zypper provide this information using xml?

Yes, and not only that. Zypper could issue a warning also in the regular output on such occasion (although that may not be needed since the user sees a kernel package to be installed in the install summary (hmm... but isn't this the case also in the updater?)).

In any case i would rather regard this as a feature request, not a bug.

You are right.

I'll change this request to enhancement.

Comment 6 Jan Kupec 2007-08-28 16:09:47 UTC
I filed an internal feature request #302536: Warn upon installing a new kernel. Resolving the bug as LATER until its implemented/rejected.
Comment 7 Jan Kupec 2007-10-06 14:06:48 UTC
reopening for 11.0
Comment 8 Jan Kupec 2007-12-09 14:31:12 UTC
The feature has been rejected: please check the installation summary before proceeding with update. Closing as WONTFIX.
Comment 9 Forgotten User --EoyBps8f 2007-12-09 14:55:27 UTC
If I use opensuseupdater it just shows "kernel" for the update. So how should I find out?
Comment 10 Jan Kupec 2007-12-09 15:04:30 UTC
What information do you need? Versions of the current kernel and the new one?
Comment 11 Jan Kupec 2007-12-09 15:07:19 UTC
BTW, IMO, what is missing here is that the updater/zypper should install the kernel in parallel to the current one by default, but that is another feature.
Comment 12 Forgotten User --EoyBps8f 2007-12-09 15:15:46 UTC
It's about flavours. I cannot see the kernel-flavour in opensuseupdater, just the patch's description and the version. The patch itself is called "kernel".

Did the person who rejected the feature try to determine the kernel-flavour of a patch in opensuseupdater? In YOU I can see the different package-names in the right-pane, but this was explicitly about opensuseupdater.
Comment 13 Richard Creighton 2007-12-09 15:28:22 UTC
This is another in a long list of anti-social behaviors like Bug 342703 that the updater program exhibits. This should NOT be resolved as a WONTFIX, it should be addressed as a real issue, especially where a kernel replacement is involved.
Comment 14 Jan Kupec 2007-12-10 12:43:46 UTC
What was reject was the notification of the kernel update.

OK, so let me rename this request to 'show the install summary in the updater' as there is a difference between the list of available updates and the actual list of to-be-installed/upgraded/removed packages. This is reasonable. We can discuss how to do it. Thomas, reassigning to you again (although you will probably need the xml output of zypper :O).
Comment 15 Thomas Göttlicher 2008-06-04 08:55:47 UTC
Due to bug 364875 this feature cannot be implemented.
