Description Robert Fraser 2007-11-21 10:24:01 UTC
openSUSE will not complete the shut down process. The last message on the console is "The system will be halted immediately". The computer will not shut off (turn itself off).

Problem is reproducible every time I shutdown.

To eliminate the possibility that I had changed some setting that prevented the computer from shutting down properly I:

Installed a fresh copy of openSUSE 10.3 from a DVD installation disc.

I confirmed that shut down worked properly and that computer was turned off at shutdown. Kernel version was 2.6.8.8-0.5.

Added an Update repository and let openSUSE update packages, including kernel, to latest versions.

Confirmed that the latest installed kernel, 2.6.22.12-0.1 will not complete the shutdown process and that the computer remains on. The last message on the console is "The system will be halted immediately".
