Currently OpenSuse-Updater only shows the transaction progress of the package that is currently being installed. That kind of information is quite useful to determine that the updater is still working and has not started to hang.
  Nevertheless it says nothing about the expected time the updater will take to finish all update/upgrade transactions. This kind of information is even more important, because the user may want to plan a shutdown or some calculation intense activity thus having to wait for the finishment of the updater.
  My suggestion would be to show the overall progress along with the expected finishing time in the osd-popup that occurrs when the mouse is moved over the updater icon. During an update the tray ico could change its color (f.e. to light green). By a click on the tray ico just the usual update window showing the individual package installation progress along with the overall progress and packages already installed should appear - simply the same as if the update was issued directly by the YaST2 control center.

The progress information that is shown by opensuseupdater-kde is provided by zypper. Jano, can zypper send the overall progress, too?

Thomas, i believe it does not make sense to do this for the zypp backend, since the packagekit is now the default. Does the packagekit one show the progress already? If yes, just close this report.
