openSuSE 11.0 Beta 3 x86_64   (DVD)
English
Graphical mode
Not sure if it's a Gnome, kernel, or application issue.
When I open any of Firefox browser, Pidgin chat or on Yast(console) hit Online updates my system freeze and there is nothing I can do, just hit restart button.
I can supply my system configuration if it needed, I didn't try yet other aplications, finded this on the first try.

Can you send your /var/log/warn log after system freeze ?

I have the same issue, although I'm working with x86 and there is no need to open any app. Right a few moments after gnome start, the system freeze.
Just to clarify bug #396166.
