The progress information is provided by the package management system. Are you using zypp-plugin or PackageKit-plugin for opensuse updater? How can i know? Right-click the opensuseupdater-icon in the taskbar, click 'Configure Applet...'. The configuration dialog tells you whether you are using 'ZYpp Plugin' or 'PackageKit Plugin'.
