OK. Change in what way? What do you suggest?
Current yast help text:
Stupid Mode disables the detection of any prompts from the dial-in
server. If the connection build-up is slow or does not work at all, try this
option.
man wvdial.conf:
When wvdial is in Stupid Mode, it does not attempt
to interpret any prompts from the terminal server.
It starts pppd immediately after the modem con-
nects. Apparently there are ISP's that actually
give you a login prompt, but work only if you start
PPP, rather than logging in. Go figure. Stupid
Mode is (naturally) disabled by default.
Hmm... "Non-interpretive Mode"? We must not cause confusion at the user's side. This basically means we ought
to line up documentation, help texts, and menue texts as much as possible.
Would it be okay labeling the checkbox
So called "Stupid Mode"
Or
Non-interpretive Mode ("Stupid Mode")
?
Users are not going to read man wvdial.conf if the configuration tools are any good, and users who do read man wvdial.conf are going to edit the file manually, anyway. Keeping this consistent for the very small minority of users who will both use yast and know to read man wvdial.conf seems very silly to me. So I think going out of your way to include 'stupid mode' is probably not very worthwhile. But I don't feel that strongly about it. I tend to agree to Luis in this regard. Karl, Martin, please replace the "stupid mode" words with something more appropriate. Karl, please also check with the manual if this is feasible for 9.2 or has to be postponed until 9.3 How about the check box label "Ignore Prompts"? It has more to do with the functionality and fits the manual page well enough. The manuals are affected, but if Edith votes for a 9.2 change we can go for it (and spend some stupid work on it ;) ). If manuals are affected, then lets postpone this for 9.3 We have this wordings since several releases now, so keeping it for one more release shouldn't harm ;-) OK, "Ignore prompts" looks good. But note that the bug is on NLD rather than 9.2. What then? Edith, who's doing the NLD manuals ? The Provo doc team is in charge of NLD. Doc project manager is "Derek Warren" DWARREN@novell.com, but I don't know if he has a bugzilla account. AFAIK, there should still be quite some time for NLD docs. Postponing the issue to 9.3 for SUSE LINUX sounds good to me. If it is on NLD we must make sure to run another translation round - I do not know whether some such round is on the agenda. "translation round" means YaST translations. comment #11: So the doc dept. is in charge regarding NLD Please assign back afterwards for SL 9.3 The _Provo_ Doc team is in charge, the SUSE doc team is not involved anymore at this point. I sent Derek an e-mail asking if he has access and quoting this thread. As edith still mentioned we aren't in charge of the NLD. Klaus, please contact dwarren@novell.com directly. Its docu related so doc dept. should establish the communication channel. If this is not possible, please set this bug to LATER. Klaus, please have a look at taskjuggler. Is there any NLD task for our departement? <!-- SBZ_reopen -->Reopened by kkaempf@suse.de at Tue Aug 17 15:16:31 2004, took initial reporter mtgordon@ximian.com to cc Ok. Setting to LATER as originally requested. For 9.3 We'd love it in for NLD, but if the backport, doc work, etc., is too much of a pain, that's fine- we're happy to take the long-term view :) <!-- SBZ_reopen -->Reopened by mvidner@suse.cz at Tue Aug 17 16:56:23 2004, took initial reporter kkaempf@suse.de to cc This looks like a storm in the teapot because of a two-word label, but the real issue is that we are not able to communicate with the NLD documentation people. Who can solve it? Concerning the change in the code, it's easy. Because of the time difference I have not heard back from Derek. Maybe he will get a Bugzilla account, then we can keep him in the loop. Ping? Martin: Whom are pinging? Me? Edith? Actually Derek. I'll mail him directly. It's the best solution. He never reacted to my e-mail quoting this bug report, while he is usually very responsive. *** Bug 6331 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Right, this is ancient. Is it still applicable? If so, we should reopen it. Just checked. You're right, it's still valid, sorry for being so quick with closing. Michal, modem config is yours, right? Can you change "stupid mode" to "ignore prompts" for 10.3, please, so we don't break SP1 localization? Karl, can you please add the doc person responsible for fixing the manuals? Jakub, the string occurs in net_lan.xml and this seems to be one of your files (at least, in the SP1 branch--that's where I checked). changed for 10.3 |
