Description Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-16 14:03:58 UTC
With both KNetworkmanager and nm-applet, I'm not able to connect to any wireless network.

For example I'm trying to connect to the "Novell" net. nm-tool shows me the interface and asks for a password:
- Device: wlan0 [Novell] ------------------------------------------------------
  Type: 802.11 WiFi
  Driver: iwl3945
  State: connecting (need authentication)
  Default: no

And the tools continue to ask me for a password.
Comment 1 Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-16 14:04:40 UTC
Btw. I do not think that this is a duplicate of #586711 - but perhaps the two are related.
Comment 2 Vladimir Botka 2010-03-16 14:59:06 UTC
It would be good to try with ifup/ifdown and try to isolate the problem. Also wpa_gui could be useful. Small how-to is here [1]. General info how-to report wifi problems is here [2].

Comment 3 Vladimir Botka 2010-03-17 07:52:43 UTC
Would it be possible to (a) install sysconfig with wpa_gui support [1] (b) switch to ifup/ifdown in Yast, (c) "killall wpa_supplicant" and (d) start wpa_gui as user ?

[1] install sysconfig from home:vbotka:sandbox/sysconfig and set WPAGUI="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/networking/config

Comment 5 Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-17 09:14:52 UTC
I have now WPA2 Personal working at home without a problem (without any changes besides updating to latest Factory).

But WPA-Enterprise is not working and I'm not able to set it up using wpa_gui so that it connects.
Comment 6 Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-17 09:27:19 UTC
Let's change the subject, it seems it's only WPA2-Enterprise that does not work.

I cannot reproduce with openSUSE 11.3 MS3 . The wlan adapter [1] is working fine in Gnome. Networkmanager messages are attached. I will test iwl3945 next.

Comment 9 Vladimir Botka 2010-03-17 11:57:33 UTC
Do not think this is driver/wpa_supplicant problem. Reassigning to default.
Comment 10 Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-17 12:14:46 UTC
Thanks Vladimir for the test. Now I'm really puzzled. Could you lend me your magic hands to fix my system? ;)

Are you running 64-bit x86-64 as well?
Comment 11 Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-17 12:17:53 UTC
I continue to see in the NetworkManager log file:
wlan0: link timed out
Activation (wlan0/wireless): association took too long
Comment 12 Vladimir Botka 2010-03-17 12:30:29 UTC
Yes, both system were x86-64. TP T60 (L669) and Acer Aspire 6920 (S685). There are many components driver-hal-dbus-wpa_supplicant-NM-applet . When the wlan does not work it is rather complex to isolate the problem. I really recommend to reduce the complexity to driver-hal-wpa_supplicant if problems arise. To make the setup easier I have built in home:vbotka:sandbox sysconfig with wpa_gui support. We discuss with mt how-to integrate it properly to sysconfig USERCONTROL and security framework.
Comment 13 Andreas Jaeger 2010-03-17 12:33:40 UTC
Then I'm out of ideas since I tried wpa_gui and it didn't work for me either.
Comment 14 Andreas Jaeger 2010-05-27 11:24:56 UTC
Regression from 11.2, adjusting severity.

This still happens with Milestone7
Comment 15 Vladimir Botka 2010-05-27 12:40:12 UTC
This seems to related to the firmware of Intel. Upstream is working on this
problem.
