User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b11) Gecko/20110203 Firefox/4.0b11

Booting from 64-bit openSUSE-11.4 RC2 KDE4 liveCD (w/nomodeset) on Dell Studio 1537 laptop with Intel WiFi Link5300. Wireless initially connects ok to home wireless LAN (WPA PSK) but after 5 minutes disconnects and will not reconnect. I note this laptop to home WLAN currently works w/64-bit openSUSE-11.3 KDE4 and Windows7. It also works ok with ipod and with older Fujitu-Siemens Amilo laptop (different hardware) on openSUSE-11.1. It also worked ok with openSUSE-11.4 RC1 on this same Intel 5300AGN/Dell-Laptop (tested for a few hours and no drops).

There are no entries in dmesg explaining disconnection. Disconnection is seen via ping and also firefox refusing to connect. When WLAN re-connection is attempted firefox will NOT connect, and ping to router sort of works but ping is VERY slow in konsole entry lines for ping (maybe 10x slower than normal), and then after 5 ping minutes stops again. But firefox does not work at all in this (and any subsequent) reconnection attempts.

Hardware:
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 [8086:4235]
        Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device [8086:1121]
        Kernel driver in use: iwlagn

Initial dmesg when connection working:

[ 317.423765] wlan0: authenticate with bc:05:43:5f:0e:cd (try 1)
[ 317.426750] wlan0: authenticated

[ 360.908053] iwlagn 0000:04:00.0: iwlagn_tx_agg_start on ra = bc:05:43:5f:0e:cd tid = 0

Laptop disconnected, but no indication in dmesg.

So then performed a manual disconnection and then it was followed by these failed reconnection attempts of mine:

Wireless disconnects within 5 to 15 minutes after liveCD boot

Expected Results:
Wireless should not disconnect.

There is a possibility that this wireless problem is specific to KDE4 and not to Gnome.

A user in openSUSE forum noted they had a problem with a Dell Studio 1747 laptop with Intel wireless when booting to a 64-bit openSUSE-11.4 GM version KDE but not when booting to Gnome. I suspect (not certain) they have the same Intel wireless as I have on my Dell Studio 1537 (which has the problem noted in this bug report).

So to test I booted the Dell Studo 1537 laptop noted in this bug report (w/Intel Wifi 5300 AGN wireless) to a 64-bit openSUSE-11.4 GM liveCD. I connected to our same home wireless LAN (that I connected with KDE with the above reported problem) but in the case of Gnome the wireless did not fail after 5 to 15 minutes.

After 1 hour the wireless is still functioning. Wireless did not work as long in my KDE tests (never more than 15 minutes). A Fluke ?

This is a possible 'fluke' and I'll keep testing (this week if I can, but I'm about to go on vacation for a week and it may not be possible). But IF this bug turns out to be KDE specific, would that not point the finger of the problem at knetworkmanger ?

In which case, are there KDE or other log files I should provide if I boot to the KDE live CD (in addition to the log files I provided previous) ?

I left the Intel WiFi 5300 AGN on this Dell Studio 1537 running from the 64-bit 11.4 Gnome liveCD run over night. It was still running in the morning, about 10 hours later with the internet functioning fine via wireless !

Clearly this works in Gnome but in KDE the wireless drops out after 5 minutes.

Please advise what logs ? (if any) I can provide when booting to KDE liveCD and I will provide what I can.

I booted this same PC (WiFi 5300 AGN on this Dell Studio 1537) to the 64-bit openSUSE-12.1 "Milestone-3.5" (ie build 0174) a couple of times, letting the PC run for 90 minutes in once case and for 180 minutes in another case.

There were no internet drops and the Internet access via wireless was fine.

Thanks your feedback, the upstream should fix it.
Comment 5 Lee Matheson 2011-10-23 17:26:11 UTC
I agree with the closed as "RESOLVED" resolution. I booted this same PC (WiFi 5300 AGN on this Dell Studio 1537) to the 64-bit openSUSE-12.1 RC1 liveCD (ie build 0379) letting the PC run for a few hours. There were no internet drops and internet via the wireless was fine.
