Description Uwe Drechsel 2011-11-18 10:23:18 UTC
I am currently running 12.1 RC1 with
Name : apper
Version : 0.7.0
Release : 3.1
Architecture: x86_64

Apper seems to be stuck in a loop, when trying to update my machine:

Finds some 1305 packages to update + some additional ones.

Asks for authentication. kwallet opens BELOW apper window, hard to find...

Resolves dependencies, ...

then goes back
to first page, listing packages, asking for authentication (though I told it to remember password),... And everything starts again.

Not usable.
Comment 1 Will Stephenson 2011-11-21 19:31:26 UTC
The authentication dialog popunder is a separate issue already queued for online update.

The looping behaviour is probably due to a package including a Eula.
Comment 2 Will Stephenson 2011-11-21 20:02:01 UTC
Please test using packagekit packages from home:wstephenson:branches:openSUSE:12.1:Update when it has published.
Comment 3 Uwe Drechsel 2011-11-22 19:20:33 UTC
Hm, seems the build failed...
Comment 4 Will Stephenson 2011-11-23 22:48:11 UTC
Trying again now.

Same problems here - apper not usable as it does not install anything (which actually results in the looping behaviour, since it still detects the uninstalled packages, which it then will not install). The "authentication dialog popunder" is also still persistent.

Still reproducible with 12.2?
Comment 8 Uwe Drechsel 2012-09-17 10:04:40 UTC
Ok, now for 12.2:

I don't know how to get apper back into the task bar. With Alt-F2 "apper" I'm offered 3 different appers:

- Apper Software Management
- Apper Software Management - KDE Control Module
- Run apper

Interestingly the first two differ in translations (full english vs. partly german)

I finally started apper ujsing the first option. It offers 12 updates for my system, while zypper up offers 157.

Selecting most of the 12, apper is going to update 153, looks better, but there is no real progress bar, just a busy indicator.

Overall: Usable, but not intuitive, feel free to close.

There are at least two parts. The GUI and the systray icon. The latter only shows if its service is enabled and updates available. the former can either be started via krunner or simply via KDE's systemsettings > software management.

You could compare the list pkcon get-updates and zypper lu show. They should be the same. Keep in mind that some patches include several packages, apper only shows the patch, zypper the might show the packages. In YOU you get the patches on the left and the list of packages they include on the right.

Regarding the progress bar: unfortunaltey the zypper devs still did not implement that feature, i.e. the zypp backend does not forward any progress information thus apper cannot display it. On other distros with different backends that works. :(

I'm going to make it a duplicate of the progress feature missing bug.

Thanks for the feedback!
