Description Michalis Kabrianis 2005-05-18 08:59:43 UTC
On May 15th, the font-company "Magenta" has donated 4 font families under a
license equivallent to that of Bitstream Vera fonts
These fonts are of high quality and have been sold commercially by the
aforementioned company until recently. These contain the Latin1 set
(iso-8859-15) and the Greek set (iso-8859-7) while one of these (MgOpenCanonica)
also contains the glyphs for ancient Greek (polytoniko).

The fonts and all relevant information may be found at:
http://www.ellak.gr/fonts/mgopen/index.en
These are the only high-quality opensource fonts containing Greek glyphs. All
other fonts are either of lesser quality (freefont), or not opensource (agfa fonts).

We would like to see these packaged in all SuSE/Novell distributions and we can
provide spec file and/or rpms if you wish.

Package submitted to autobuild for inclusion in the next version of
SuSE Linux.
Comment 3 Mike Fabian 2005-05-18 12:40:05 UTC
Stefan Dirsch added mgopen-fonts to the selections in order to install
it by default when the installation is done in Greek or Greek is
selected as a secondary language.

Comment 4 Filippos Papadopoulos 2005-10-20 11:17:15 UTC
It seems that these fonts are not included in SuSE 10.0 retail version.
Comment 5 Mike Fabian 2005-10-20 14:30:46 UTC
Sorry, this is probably my fault.

I pasted the text of the license in our package database and
selected as license type "Commercial" because it was none
of the well known open source licenses but something different.

It didn't occur to me that this meant a high risk that the package
would not end up on the media.

I should have selected "Other uncritical open source license" instead.

This is fixed now, therefore the package should appear on the next SuSE
version.

Adding our license expert Jürgen Weigert <jw@suse.de> to the CC.
Comment 6 Mike Fabian 2005-10-20 14:32:51 UTC
Assign bug to Rüdiger Oertel <ro@suse.de> to make sure to
include the package in the next release.
Comment 7 Ruediger Oertel 2005-10-26 22:22:32 UTC
"next release" -> adapting product

license part still to be verified.
Comment 8 Juergen Weigert 2005-11-11 15:00:22 UTC
license verified. Effectivly identical to bitstream license. Go ahead.
Comment 9 Ruediger Oertel 2005-11-14 16:31:53 UTC
hm: "Effectivly identical to bitstream license."

bitstream-vera:
     "Commercial (all types)","Free Text available"

mgopen-fonts:
"Other uncritical OpenSource License","Free Text available"

so one is "pay" the other is "oss" ...
Comment 10 Juergen Weigert 2005-11-14 16:52:18 UTC
Commercial is more often 'all types' than 'pay'.
Corrected bitstream-vera to 'Other uncritical OpenSource License'.
Comment 11 Ruediger Oertel 2005-11-28 16:18:26 UTC
- added to FACTORY tree
- lars: please have a look if the CDs still have space for these two:
    bitstream-vera and mgopen-fonts
Comment 12 Lars Vogdt 2005-11-30 10:05:49 UTC
on ToDo for next alpha...
Comment 13 Lars Vogdt 2005-12-01 14:40:06 UTC
ok: added bitstream-vera and mgopen-fonts - and dropped other packages for the next oss-cds. FYI: We've more than 3000 packages on 5 700MB-CDs for OSS now - no more space left on device...
=> fixed for these two and some other packages - but not for all...
