Description Forgotten User 2N9JSiSXM- 2016-03-01 10:22:29 UTC 
After running a 'zypper up' on 2016-03-01 and rebooting, plasma hangs on the splash screen indefinitely. This means it is not possible to use the machine.

Running OpenSUSE LEAP 42.1.

Other notes:
- After the update, the shutdown dialog immediately does not work.
- I was able to launch kwin and plasma-shell manually from another tty but when trying to launch any KF5 application I get errors along the lines of the following:

dolphin: relocation error: /usr/lib64/libKF5XmlGui.so.5: symbol _ZN15QGuiApplication35setFallbackSessionManagementEnabledEb, version Qt_5 not defined in file libQt5Gui.so.5 with link time reference

This bug can be reproduced on a fresh user account.

Please see next comment for the packages installed by the update which breaks plasma.

Suggesting high priority as this bug has rendered the machines affected inoperable as the plasma shell does not load. It has been reported at least 4 times in the space of a few minutes in #suse this morning.

I can confirm this very same issue, and steps to reproduce in my almost fresh KVM VM.

I also tryed cleaning KDE caches for the mainuser initially. - Did not work 
Very fresh user for testing purpose. - Same issue.

Directly after installing the updates the shutdown dialogue already stopped working.

If you get stuck on the Plasma splashscreen, and need any form of Desktop in the meantime you can switch to VT e.g.:
CRTL + ALT + F1 and try to get to sddm. e.g. with:
rcxdm stop
rcxdm start

From there you can select another Desktop session and logon with existing user account.

I suggest to put the severity to critical. I'm affected as well.

Work-around to get some apps working:

- login with icevm
- start xterm

- using xterm, you can start 'plasmashell'

Apps based on KF5 or Qt5 like Dolphin, Okular, etc. are not working.

Other apps, like Firefox, Kile (still KDE4), Kontact are working.

Actually you don't even need to reboot your system to see if you are affected. Simply starting an application like kwrite will result in the following error on an affected system:

kwrite: relocation error: /usr/lib64/libKF5XmlGui.so.5: symbol _ZN15QGuiApplication35setFallbackSessionManagementEnabledEb, version Qt_5 not defined in file libQt5Gui.so.5 with link time reference

I then made the mistake of rebooting rather than downgrading (thank goodness for IceWM to easily recover). I can confirm the workaround in comment #12 works (I choose to let zypper automatically downgrade whatever it suggested rather than force it). Afterwards from the terminal I could start kwrite again without problems.

The downgrade worked well for me on 17 machines.  Just had to add the lang package.  So the command line was 
`zypper in -f libKF5KDELibs4Support5-5.16.0-3.6 libKF5XmlGui5-5.16.0-3.1 libQt5Gui5-5.5.1-4.1 libKF5XmlGui5-lang-5.16.0-3.1.noarch`
Waiting for the update to reach the mirrors.

The missing packages are now available in the update repository, the issue is resolved now.

The cause for this issue was that two update incidents were built in parallel, one libqt5 security update and another recommended KDE Frameworks update depending on it. This is not normal practice but was chosen in this case to achieve proper separation between security and non-security updates.

This set of updates was tested internally together without issues, and it was known that they depend on each other. However contrary to plan the KDE Frameworks update was released first, and due to lack of explicit version dependency was also installable, resulting in the observed breakage of the binaries.

In addition, the release of the missing libqt5 updates was slightly delayed due to a build service problem which was quickly resolved.

Our apologies to the affected users and thanks to those verifying the corrections.

Users finding themselves still in need of the update please do the following:
* Press CTRL-ALT-F2
* log in as root
* run "zypper patch"
* reboot (or rcxdm restart)
